Over the hills and far away: Music to scare NormalsPosted by: J. Michael in Army Training!, Music, To Scare NormalsI’ve always liked the “Over the Hills and Far Away” song from the “Sharpe’s Rifles” series of movies. Some one has made a mash up of all of them the various movies. I need to look up John Tams and see what else he has done. Random Dafydd care to comment, he being closer to your style of music than mine. “The Leningrad Cowboys” do “Monty Python”. It doesn’t get much stranger than this. Normally I don’t deal well with covers of the 4 or 5 songs that make up my internal soundtrack. Blue Oyster Cult’s Burning for You is one of those. Shiny Toy Guns have done, while not a quite a cover, a version of it, which got parts of it picked up by the Lincoln MKS commercial. Once I got the car right it was a quick google to get. While It’s not going to replace the BOC version in my internal track, it’s not 100% bad either. It’s not the same song, for several reasons, it’s more like a song inspired by “Burning for you” I have always like 3 doors down before I found this track First my song for The Darling Wife My current internal song The more I listen to “Behind Blue Eyes” the more I identify with the POV singer. One of my other internal songs is “Winterborn Rounding out the list would be The Redheaded Girls song for me. At least at one time it was. When I’m Gone, by Three Doors Down

Haven’t done one in a while – Search phrase LottoPosted by: J. Michael in Gaming, Life, Medical, Music, Rants about, Search Lotto, Software, Tech, WorkThis is a list of things that Ice-rocket found for my site in the last 3 weeks or so. Not all of them, of course. Some of my replies are snark, some are advice, some is deadly serious. I leave it to the reader to figure out which is which. Spelling and punctuation to the left of the : marks are from Ice-rock. Errors to the right of the : are mine. Leading off the pack, once you get past all the various versions of “[why] my life sucks” is
Because the damn out of the box version of the ATI Radeon X11 driver doesn’t support xrandr, at least not on current release of ubuntu, I’m going to attempt to get Godzilla working with the stuff I need on it via Gentoo. Stand by for something like a live geek blog. Granted, even with this box, I don’t expect Godzilla to be a working box for at least a week, working being defined as “I can read a US Army supplied .DOC file, Read a PDF, Write a pdf, (ideally from Lyx) run DigiKam and Gimp 2.6, ssh into other machines, and run Firefox 3.x, all in portrait mode, with out going nuts on how freaking slow the video driver is. Displaying a flash animation with sound is optional. Also must be able to boot in to windows. Being able to read/write the NTFS partition would also be nice. Just got the stage 3 tar ball down. The fun starts now. First edit 10:18 This is not a good sign. It takes over an hour to download and untar the stage 3 and portage tarballs? Gack. I’m going to live on the edge, mainly because I want Gimp 2.6, so I’ve turned on the ~x86 keyword, in a global fashion. Done before any compiles or what not, so it should, repeat, should work OK. Chrooted and about to type emerge –sync It’s 10:25 It seems to be deleting an whole lot of freaking files, like if I didn’t know better, I would say all of them in the metadata/cache directory, which is what took a ghod damn hour to un tar. And now it’s putting them back. You would think something called “current snapshot” would in fact be the current snapshot. This does not seem to be the case. Sigh of heaviness. Finished at 11:03, then wanted to emege it’s self. Which fail. My error. It seems gcc 4.1.2 doesn’t know what a Core2 arch is. Got to go fix that. OK, set to noccona for now, and emerge portage went fine. Told it I’m a ‘mercan that speaks lish and I live in fly over country and we are about to suck down the kernel source. It’s 11:15. Didn’t take as long to snarf and barf as I thought. It’s 11:28. Now the fun starts for real. Making a kernel. Oh Joy. First, of course, get and compile the genkernel tool. At 11:52 the compile starts. I did turn on a freaking ton of modules, but then again, that’s why I used genkernel to start with. That was fairly quick It’s only 12:07 and it’s done? OK then. Going to load up vi now, just because I hate nano. Did the other tools (cron, etc) and grub. Grub seems to have problems with the lack of a floppy drive OK, 1:00 exactly and it dual boots. Granted the Linux side is useless, but that will do for now. Just short of 3 hours to get the bare bones installed. Now the real stuff. Start with X. It’s 1:31. Just started to attempt first compile of X11 That’s 101 things it has to download and compile. Of course, ran into a circular dependency based on having the HAL turned on. That’s Hardware Abstraction Layer, not some thing that says “Dave” a lot. Going to bed. Will launch Xfce4’s emerge in the morning before going to work. A double dose of Adderall in the morning is not a good idea. Did that yesterday. Some random notes about why this is not a good idea.
If this doesn’t scare you, you need to have your scare meter calibrated. And, no, AD, it does not need more Cowbell OK, I’m a geek. I know that. But this dude needs to get out more. On the other hand, it’s sort of impressive in weird sort of way. 4 part harmony for a single voice. It is, well, odd.
Have you ever noticed how much rock music is about, well, rock music? Either tributes to other rockers, bitching about being on the road or just plain about rock. This effect is spread over a wide area, both good and bad bands do it. It seems to me that this sub genre of seems to account for about 10% or so of all rock. Not a rant, just a note. Depending on your status as a normal this may or may not be scary. You go to a mainstream church if the words in your head start with “What Child is this”. I heard this tune as I was driving into $WeSellUsedMacs. Of my cow-orkers , well, crap, none of them were alive when this was taped. I need all of you punks to get the hell off my lawn!
AC/DC – It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll – . Even allowing for Mà ¶tley Crà ¼e’s suckage, the rock (vs the pop music) of the late 70’s to mid 80’s did, in fact rule. Heh, I suspect I’ve lost enough weight in the last 6 months that my old high school ear “Disco Sucks” tee shirt would fit again. Of course it should say “Disco Still Sucks”. So, I find my self driving back from the shrink, playing XM 41 as normal. A song comes on. I turn it up and start singing along. Yeah, so, why the going to hell? The song was “Every Rose has it’s thorn” by Poison. I can’t believe I 1) know that song well enough to sing along with it and 2) I thought that singing along with Poison would be a good idea. Poison, for crying out loud. Back in the day they were the band we called “Poser”. The shame of it all. On the medical front, the shrink changed my Cymalta dose to 40mg a day, vs the 60mg I have been taking for the last 4 weeks, in an attempt to get my falling over dizzy spells to stop. I’m coming up on a birthday. A fairly important one, most likely my last prime square, but not a LRN just yet. So, Yeah, I’m an old fart. What music station do I find my self using most? XM radio 41. “The Boneyard”. It’s for classic metal, things that sound like classic metal, and prog-rock. It’s target audience is high school class of , ‘76 through ‘86, more or less. It’s old music, or at least an old style. It’s mainly listened to by old farts. You would not know this if you listened to the self promo spots they run. You would think it’s for class of 2015. Adults, as a general rule, don’t really have to make a semi-sexual pun on “bone me” several times an hour. That’s a twelve year old thing. I’m going to try to post at least one post a day for the next year. I have to get doing something and this seems like a good idea as any thing. Any rate, this is Albannach, a really trad Scottish band. Don’t forget that the bagpipe is a weapon of war. This will show you why..

I’ve just found that Temazpam and Cafeine don’t mixPosted by: J. Michael in Gaming, Medical, Music, Politics, Rants aboutSo I’m posting a bit more tonight. Then I’m going to read Classic Traveller background material getting ready for my Mongoose Traveller game. As an aside, I fully support Mongoose Publishing and their attempt at making MGT open gaming. Their licensees are fair and easy to use, which is more than I can say for the Wizards of the Coasts current license, the GSL Like I said over on Fly Over Thoughts, “It’s All Carter and Clinton’s fault“ I don’t know if the bail out plan is the perfect move, but I do know it wasn’t GW Bush’s fault.
Who ever it is that is doing the song about ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, please, just go a way. At least get of the internet radio station that plays in my shop. 5 times a day is way too freaking often. Not Safe For Work, like any thing I do is. This was sent to me by a cow-orker that was making a reply to this one. While I have linked to a Dred Zep song before, I didn’t include it in the “Scare Normals” list. I give you Dread Zeppelin – Immigrant Song 3:38
