The EU Parliament isn’t like US Congress

Can you amaging the effect this would have if a it was done in the US congress?

“‘Access to Guns,’ Not Jihad, to Blame for Ft. Hood, Says Noted Islamic Scholar,” by Charles C. Johnson (no, not the libelblogger) at Big Government, February 8:

Imam Zaid Shakir came to speak at my school, Claremont McKenna, on December 9th to respond to the “tragedy of Ft. Hood.” Rather than respond to the massacre of American servicemen, Shakir spent the evening indicting the United States – saying “we were born in genocide.” The reason for the Ft. Hood Massacre, according to Shakir? Not jihad or Islamic fundamentalism, but the “pervasiveness of violence in our society” and because of Americans’ “easy access to guns.”

“Spain: Restraining Order On Imam For Threats To Muslim Woman,” from ANSAmed, February 9 (thanks to Insubria):

“(ANSAmed) – MADRID, FEBRUARY 9 – A judge in the court of the province of Tarragona has banned a radical imam in the Catalonian town of Cunit from coming within a certain distance of a moderate Muslim woman who accused the man of repeatedly threatening her for her ‘Western’ behaviour, reports El Pais today. The same restraining order was issued by the judge against another three individuals who are associated with the imam, who are accused of taking part in the threats against the woman.”

This is my “What the hell are they thinking” for the week or so. It seems that in the land down under you can’t have small breasted porn stars any more. It’s for the children you see. If they allow A cup porn stars it will lead to pedophilia.

“Australian Classification Board (ACB) is now banning depictions of small-breasted women in adult publications and films. They banned mainstream pornography from showing women with A-cup breasts, apparently on the grounds that they encourage paedophilia, and in spite of the fact this is a normal breast size for many adult women. Presumably small breasted women taking photographs of themselves will now be guilty of creating simulated child pornography, to say nothing of the message this sends to women with modestly sized chests or those who favour them.”

France is starting to get it.

Political Spectrum Quiz

Unlike most of them this one has, in addition to the questions, a scale of how important the question is to you.

Right now, Sen. Joe Lieberman just jumped to the top of my favorite Senators. He gets it. He called that attack on Ft. Hood a terrorist attack. He called the attack on the recruiting station a terrorist attack He also just called for a zero tolerance policy toward militant Islamic militants in the US Army (I suspect that means the whole military).

Then in the next breath said the would not vote for a health bill that had a “public option” plan.

From the Times of London on line

INS Tabar, an Indian frigate dispatched last month to the area to protect the country’s merchant fleet, sighted the pirate vessel late on Tuesday. Indian officers said they spotted pirates moving on the deck with rocket propelled grenade launchers and automatic weapons. “On repeated calls, the vessel’s threatening response was that she would blow up the naval warship,” the Indian Navy said in a statement. “INS Tabar retaliated in self defence and opened fire on the mother vessel. “As a result of the firing by INS Tabar, fire broke out on the vessel and explosions were heard, possibly due to exploding ammunition that was stored on the vessel.”

First, Ethiopia, now India. Looks like the founding members of the “non-aligned” nations are going to fix the West’s biggest loss (so far) in the GWoT. Speaking of which, I need to come up with a nice punchy thing to call it, other than GWoT. The US military is leaning towards “The Long War”, but I use that for the 1917-1989 war against Russian communism. The Neo-Crusade? The 10th Crusade?   The Arab Wars?

This is a cross post from “Fly Over Thoughts

Actually, I do care, but really, when you get down to it, I don’t. While I think the most important issue of my generation and the next (i.e. The Other Writers kids) is the Islamic Jihad against the West. I don’t think we will loose it due to who the president is for 4-8 years. We won the Long War (1918-1989) despite some fairly bad choices in the White House. Which ones were bad choices and why I leave as an exercise for the reader. I’m sure any one that reads this blog can find a bad one in that time frame.

I have faith in the people of the West, and I don’t think we are going to go quietly into that good night. If not, well, I’m perfectly willing to be a 21st century “Flandry Of Terra”. I may not stop the Fall of Night, but it will not happen while I still live.

American civilization will survive a higher tax rate on capital gains. It will survive a higher base income tax rate. Hell, it will even survive single payer medical system. We might not like it as much, but none of these would kill what we call America. Sharia law, on the other, would. Noting remotely resembling America would survive under that.

Long, long ago, I posted this. It’s still the most important thing. Never Surrender. Never give in.

It’s not “it’s the economy stupid”. It never will be again. Please don’t fall into that pit, for that way lies madness.

I just pulled all the politcal/military blogs and RSS feeds from my daily reading lists.

I might, repeat might, put them back in on 1-20-2009.

I will be posting, slowly, my daily reading list and including some link love.

I posted this over on my multi part political blog as well.

We, as Americans tend to think we elect military men to the presidency. Looking over the elections of my life, this really doesn’t seem to be the case.

1964. Barry Goldwater had served as a pilot in Burma, among other places, and remained a member of the Air Force reserve after the war. LBJ served in the navy for a total of 7 months (Dec 10, 1941 to July 16th, 1942) He got the Silver star for being in a plane (as an observer, not the pilot) that had engine trouble and had to turn back when attacked by 8 fighters. Note that the plane was not hit. Also note he was, in addition to being a naval officer, still a member of congress at this time. This may have had something to do with the Silver Star. Any rate, winner of the election, not the real war hero.

1968 Richard Nixon served in the US Navy, as a logistical officer in Ottumwa, Iowa, (Navy. Iowa. Ok, what ever). Then went on to be a logistical officer in the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command, part of the Guadalcanal campaign. He won vs Herbert Humphrey, who never served. While not exactly a war hero, he was the vet.

1972 Nixon vs McGovern. McGovern, of course was a real war hero, being a bomber pilot. The war hero lost. Granted he was running as as the peace candidate.

1976 Gerald Ford vs Jimmy Carter. Both served (well, Carter was in the USNA during the war, which means he get’s a * by his name for war time service) Gerald Ford served on the carrier USS Monterey which one of the ships hit by the Typhoon Cobra. His action in leading fire fighting teams was credited was the saving of the USS Monterey. So, he war hero lost again.

1980 Reagan vs Carter. Wash. Both were “under arms” in WWII, but Carter was a cadet at USNA and Reagan was making movies for the Army. First post war election where neither could be called a war hero, by any terms. For what it’s worth, Reagan was not medically fit for combat duty, Carter was. If the war had gone on for another year, it’s a near sure thing Carter, as submarine officer, would have seen combat. Reagan, not so much.

1984 Reagan vs Mondale. Mondale served in the US army during the Korean war, to earn GI Bill money to go to law school. He spent his tour of duty in Fort Knox. His claim to fame, so to speak is that he was the first post war candidate that was not an officer. He made E-4 in two years. Just for what it’s worth I made E-5 in 18 months and E-5 in two years. Just saying. Another wash on the war hero thing. At least the both did serve, and Mondale did serve during the time of shooting war. Not his fault he was sent to Ft. Knox

1988 GHW Bush vs Dukakis. Dukakis spent 2 years drafted in the Army, after the end of the Korean war. He did spend 16 months on the DMZ. Bush, of course, was a real war hero, being the youngest naval pilot at one point. In this case, yeah, the war hero won.

1992. Let’s not even start about Bill Clinton and the military. Let’s just say he didn’t not serve and beat the war hero, GHW Bush. Of course if the Texas Gnome has stayed out, he would not have, but that’s neither here nor there.

1996 Robert Dole vs Bill Clinton. Rear honest by God wounded in action infantry platoon leader and decorated war hero vs a draft dodger. Dodger wins.

2000 GW Bush vs Gore. Gore was a SP/4 news reporter for the The Castle Courier (the news paper of the 20th Engineer Brigade) in Viet Nam. Members of his paper staff were in fact killed in action. Personal side note. One of my sections chiefs in my first tour in German was in the 20th Brigade during the same time frame as Gore. (SSG later SFC Panfile. aka the Skinny Ginny He was the highest decorated member of the battery when I was here, having a Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars a 3 awards of the Purple Heart. He also had 4 Arcoms. Some of the Arcoms were post his moving to ADA I’ll grant ) GW Bush was a F-106 Delta Dart driver. I’ll let my Nike back ground show here, but the Delta Dart isn’t a fighter, it’s a missile that in theory lands after it’s mission. It was steered by controllers on the ground using the SAGE system, which, BTW is exactly what the Nike Herc did as well, with out risking a pilot. Bad system, inflicted on the US by Robert McNamara and the Wiz Kids, but I digress. Again, the one that came closest to seeing the elephant lost.

2004 Say what you will about Kerry, he was over there. Bush was not. Of course Kerry’s actions after he returned and the fact that his awards were of the classic Viet Nam Cracker Jack box type awards doesn’t help, but again, Bush’s MOS, with out even raising the issue of him actually doing it, could have been done by roughly 15 vacuum tubes and large oil filled resister element. Let’s just say the one closer to hero status lost.

That brings us to Obama vs McCain. War hero vs some one that hasn’t served. Doesn’t look good. Only time the Vet won was Nixon and Bush 41, and Dukakis at least served on the Korean DMZ, back when that was 100 percent safe. 11 election. One war hero wining and one vet vs non vet winning, but when the supply officer went up against a bomber pilot, the REMF won. Aside from GHW Bush, we haven’t elected a warrior since I have be aware of the concept of the presidency.

My brother, Random Dafyyd, will point out that that I’m not mentioning JFK vs Nixon. Why? while I was alive in 1960, I was less than a year old. Doesn’t register on me at all. Even including that we have two serving officers, and the winner’s claim to fame was he got his PT 109 boat run over by a IJN destroyer. His action after being t-boned might have been heroic, but it was his bad seamanship that got him there to start with.

So I’m posting a bit more tonight.   Then I’m going to read Classic Traveller background material getting ready for my Mongoose Traveller game.

As an aside, I fully support Mongoose Publishing and their attempt at making MGT open gaming.     Their licensees are fair and easy to use, which is more than I can say for the Wizards of the Coasts current license, the GSL

Like I   said over on Fly Over Thoughts, “It’s All Carter and Clinton’s fault

I don’t know if the bail out plan is the perfect move, but I do know it wasn’t GW Bush’s fault.

My Brother, aka the Scub or Random Dafydd posted this over on Fly Over Thoughts. I replied there, but I’m doing a cross post, because, well, I can.

Is my understanding any where near reality?

Is this a good idea, or a bad idea?

Depends. Do you think 1929 to 1941 were good for America as a whole or not? Let’s not forget that we have already started our generation’s long war, which means we can’t depend on an WWII analog to got us out the “Great Depression 2.0″, so, yeah, I’m force to say that the just shy of a trillion dollar bail out is a good thing, in the long run.

The fact that both of us own houses is, really, when you get down to it part of the problem. I’ll grant that my owning a house wasn’t really my idea, and I sort of got sandbagged by my brother in law on when I had to get the mortgage, but I will point out that my mortgage is not one that got sold down the line, and that I’m not doing any of those weird exotic type things, and my interest rate is both fixed and fairly high. Still, if it wasn’t for the fact that we were only going for a fraction of the house’s cost, we should not have gotten the loan, based on the fact that I was, at the time, unemployed (and more or less unemployable). We are pulling out of my death spiral, but it’s a long hard row to hoe.

I haven’t posted in while, not because my life doesn’t suck, but because I don’t post about family members issues. Let’s just say I’ve spent a lot of time at or near the Pink Palace on the Hill over the last few weeks.

Plus, well, dealing the [REDACTED]’s city inspection teams. My back yard is now down. Grunt.

I am going to post about my Cow-orkers some time soon, however.

But, just to show you that my life has ALWAYS sucked, here is a story of mine that I pulled from UseNet about some of my time in the US Army.

[fx type="army_story"]

“This is no shit” [1]

This would have been in 1979, early spring, at Ft. Bliss Texas. I was going to my first AIT (24Q10). I was assigned to the “Student Battalion”
of the “School Brigade” of the Air Defense School. Also attached to the brigade was the International Student Battalion. At the time the US was trying to
be nice to various Arab states, among them Kuwait. Kuwait had bought some HAWK ADA systems and was having some troops trained there [2]. At any rate,
one group of trainees had finished and had gone back to Kuwait. Leaving the American army to clean up their mess they left behind. Note that where
“Attached” not “Assigned” to the ADA School, and while they were in school, no American Officer or NCO had been in their areas. Each class of
the US Student battalion (each about 30 some odd troopies) was given a half of a floor to clean (a Shower Room and say 30 rooms). We were (at
the start) given 3 days to do this. We arrive, bright eyed and bushy tailed, and went up to the 3rd floor. Gagging noises. Stench like you can
not begin to believe. Knee deep trash over the hallway. Holes punched in the wall. Our class leader, a fellow Student (who re-uped with change of
MOS) took one look down the hall and said “This is going to take more than 3 days” and ran down to the staff folk to tell them that, leaving me more
or less in charge (I was a PFC at the time and was the ranking private in the detail). I wander down to hall to the shower room, where, lo unto my
eyes I find a semi butchered goat hanging in the shower stall, and a small grill in the vestibule for the shower. Of course this is May, in El Paso.
They had been gone for, at this point about 4 days. You can guess what state of “ripening” the goat was in. The long and short of it is, while I
have not been a janitor by trade, I have cleaned up some rather gross things, not of my own choice or making.

[/fx]

[1] All Army stories start off this way. Required by law, I think.

[2] Having seen what are supposed to be the best of the Arab ground forces (Air Defense, to counter the Israeli Air Force), I no longer wonder how
the IDF did so well in ‘67 or for that matter in ‘73 or ‘80 or why Desert Storm went the way that it did. Not real good troops, IMAO

I, for one, would like to know what this is of.   Regardless, it’s way freaking cool.   I mean, seriously, what the hell?   On the other hand, this does make me want to vote Palin/McCain more than before. I mean, if we can have VP who will hang out with people in odd costumes, in 16 or so years having a President who used to be Prince of Drakenwald will not be so weird.

For the first time in my life, one of the major presidential candidates is younger than me.

And one of the Vice Presidential candidates as well.

Grumble.

I haven’t really done one in a while.

This, quite possibly, is the most important film made.

Warning, it’s roughly an hour and half long.

It doesn’t exist. At all. So I’m going to rant a a bit here.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve walked into one of the high profile high schools in town, and wandered around, with out any one saying squat. Yes, I had a reason to be there, but any one that knows what I look like, and knows my “I’m in a bad mood” walk, facial expression and stare is like would think that some adult would ask who the hell I am. Yes, I’m saying that a long haired, more than slightly freaked out looking 48 year old male should be asked what the hell he is doing in a public high school during lunch. If anybody needed to be profiled at a high school it would be me.

Not in Tulsa it seems.

The massively over weight “security” guards that my property tax money is paying for are a waste.

If your supposed to check people at the door, check them at the door. Don’t go wandering off. Check people at the door. Check ID. Ask what the hell that gun sized object in their cargo pants pockets is. Do the fucking job you were hired to do. At least they are armed, so if a shooting does happen, they have a chance of stopping it. Of course given they fact they they are so freaking over weight, I suspect that it would take them way to long to get to the other end of the school, if they needed to. If you need armed guards, you need fit armed guards. Fat fucks that aren’t where they are supposed to be aren’t worth having. In the US Army, that’s deserting you post and you can be shot for it in time of war. It damn sure should be at least noticed by the people that parents trust their children to.

Grrr.

I read the National Review Online’s mass blog “The Corner”

This morning, I read this.. Andrew is one of their writers I’m least likely to have issues with.

Then, one of the writers I’m most likely to have issue with, “Klo” wrote this in reply. Kathryn, for what it’s worth, is everything I don’t like about some type of conservative women. Just for the record, she is rather violently opposed to both women in combat and gays in the military, plus seems a bit weird about parents in the military in general.

Lady, you can’t have it both ways. You seem to want young single straight male to be the US military.
Clue the first, young straight males think about sex a lot. Really a lot. You have no more chance of getting Playboy and such like out of the Military than you do getting any one under the rank of Lt. General to stop saying “Fuck”. It’s not going to happen.

Next clue. I know what they sell in the PX. What they sell is not porn. Also, at least in Germany and Ft. Bliss, where they sell Playboy’s isn’t where under age folk are going to find it. It’s not in the main PX, it’s in the ‘barracks’ PX’s I will grant that my info is a few years (few defined as roughly 20) out of date, but if your going to tell me that the 1970’s and 1980’s was less porn friendly than now, I don’t think we really live in the same world. If any thing, it’s harder to get “porn” in main stream America than it was in 1986 when I got out. It’s much harder to find real honest by gosh naked women photos in a random store than it was in the 80’s. The internet has a lot to do with that, of course.

Next clue: Playboy isn’t porn. It’s naked women, yeah, but it’s at best R rated. There have been PG movies with as much nudity as your average issue of Playboy. You can show images that would fit in a copy of Playboy without needing to jump through most of the 2257 hoops.

Next, Congress critter Broun, don’t you have any thing else better to do? I went to your taxpayer paid for page web page and your own page, which I assume is paid for by your campaign

Here are the top parts of the tax payer paid for page:

“I am committed to protecting the constitutional rights and pocketbooks of every American. I will apply the following four-way test to every piece of legislation that comes before the House for a vote:

1) Is it Moral / Right? 3) Is it Necessary?
2) Is it Constitutional? 4) Is it Affordable? “

And the news photo caption:”On a visit to the University of Georgia, Congressman Broun
talks with head football coach Mark Richt and discusses legislative issues facing the university.”

Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.
I don’t want you, or any other Congress critter to decide what is Moral, much less make it your number one test. Morality is not the government’s job. I’d also be MUCH more impressed if you spoke with, oh I don’t know, Michael F. Adams , the president of the UoG or Steve Wrigley the Vice President for Government Relations of the UoG instead of the fucking football coach. Maybe you did, but that didn’t make it to your web site.

Don’t even get me started about your own flash encrusted, audio playing (with no off button) piece of crap personal page. Let’s just start with who is INTERSCAPE, INC and why are they listed as both the administrative and technical contact in your WHOIS database entry?

While I don’t live in Georgia, I can’t vote for or against you, you just made it to my watch and rant list.

They work, and work well, as this terrorist asshat finds out.

Have a good time with 72 Virginians there dude.

I have long made a distinction between between rock bands who happen to be made up of Christians, and Christian Rock Bands. I like the first, not so much on the second.

Over the course of the last couple of days it hit me. There is a difference between a blog by a conservative person and a Conservative Blog. It’s starting to be like rock bands here as well.

I’ve also come to the conclusion, that with the possible exception of NRO’s John Derbyshire and Jay Nordlinger, there isn’t a political blogger out there that I don’t have at least one major issue with. More on this later, with full rant attached, got to polish it up a bit.

Tulip and bugIt’s spring. That means I’m taking pictures of flowers. This particular tulip grows in a rather awkward spot in my back yard. Makes mowing a bit tricky. This weekend was weird. Found out that not taking my “blue pills” (no, not those, my 10mg Amphetamine pills) and trying to DM a longish high level (15th plus) D&D 3.5 game isn’t really a good idea. This really isn’t new, just I didn’t really understand what a difference they made. Previous games were (after I started taking the speed) 5-6 hours or more. This one ran about 3 and half hours, and I was wiped out.

I’ve got an appointment with Dr. McClure tomorrow, will talk about weird sleep patterns, hope to go get that taken care of. Still not sure how much is the new anti-depressants, how much was the antihistamines and how much of it was I was in a pretty bad funk for the last 10 days.

On the headache front, I am aware this is not real data, but I can give a single data point on this. Despite what you may read, say here I’ve had one, count it, one, migraine after I changed out the CFL bulbs in my house for normal glowing wire sort of light bulbs. I was having them near daily. This was not helping my mental state. yes, I know, not a real scientific study and the plural of anecdote is not datum, but I do know what has happened to me. Trust me, the other stress factors and migraine triggers in my life right around the time I made that change got worse, not better. I really hope the statements that they have new designs fix this issue or that Ms. Bachmann gets her bill passed.

Or it might be the antihistamines. Any rate I opened up my normal right wing blog RSS blog list this morning, opened a tab on all the new stories. About half way down the first I sighed and closed all tabs.

I just didn’t feel like dealing with it all. This also may be a side effect of the fact that I changed my anti-depressants a couple of days ago. More on the new drugs once I can tell what is the AD vs the antihistamines.

Right now I have the some what bizarre combination of speedy feeling, like I get for the first 30 min after taking amphetamines (it’s not that big of rush, sort of like drinking 2 or 3 cups of coffee) and sleepy. Add in stuffy nose and I’m just sort of a hair shy of useless this morning.

For the love of God, the Invisible Pink Unicorn and the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and every thing else that is holy, I don’t know what to say.

If your coming here from the other place, hello. If your not coming here from the other place, nice to see you as well.

For everybody, here is one of my favorite videos of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Divine Wind”

“If he really thinks were the devil, let’s send him to hell….”

They were writing about the Ayatollah Khomeini. Works just as well for the currents leader of Iran, Hugo Chavez or Osama bin Laden. It’s not often that a popular metal band “gets it” but they did and still do.

Blood of bat, tail of newt
Wing of metal, gold or steel
Fight of health, flash of pain
Staff of life, or poison rain

If he really thinks we’re the devil, then let’s send ‘em to hell

Fast food, fast cars
Fast women, movie stars
Time of trouble, time of trial
Turn to Memphis, pray awhile

If he really thinks we’re the devil, then let’s send ‘em to hell

Anxious lovers, bums in the street
Jackals in waistcoats, men in sheets
Purple mountains, waves of grain
Grace of God, thy will be done

If he really thinks we’re the devil, then let’s send ‘em to hell
If he really thinks we’re the devil, then let’s send ‘em to hell
(shouted) If he really thinks we’re the devil, then let’s send ‘em to hell

Lyrics by D. Roeser

I was for Giuliani, but he went weird on his plan. Not his ideas mind you, just how to run for office. I could have lived with Fred Thompson, but he had an even weirder idea on how to run for office.

But the more I read and listen to McCain, the more I like him.

What made you become aware of Arab Terrorist? For me, the thing that drove it home was the Munich Olympic Massacre, followed by the US embassy take over in Iran.

Super Tuesday is over and I will not hear any more political ads for at least 6 months.

The bad news is that various people are reading way to much into the Oklahoma results.

For starters, we are the state that disproves this meme. Oklahoma’s black percentage is 7.76% . Well under 15%. Hillary won by like 24%.

Then we have the issue with Huckabee’s “sweep” of the south. Not so fast bucky. McCain won here. Granted only by 3 percent, but this is a more or less winner take all state for the GOP. I’ll grant that Huckabee won 2 of the 5 congressional districts, giving him 6 delegates, but it’s still not a sweep. Stop saying that.

I’m starting to hate listening to various political types on MSNBC.

1) Oklahoma is not “Midwest” and
2) It’s not “critical” for the Clinton campaign. It’s not critical for any Democrat. It’s going to go for the Republican by up to 20%, regardless of who it is. The last Democrat to carry Oklahoma in a presidential election was LBJ in 196freaking4
